Makeup Trends On The Runway with Carol Mackie

Artists At Play TPFF 2018 Makeup Director, Carol Mackie has creatively worked with stars such as Fergi, Gemma Ward and our homegrown Supermodel Nicole Trunfio. She shares with us makeup trends for the coming season as well as what inspires her team for the 2018 Telstra Perth Fashion Festival.

Given that this year is TPFF’s 20th Anniversary, what are your thoughts on the key trends and looks that have stood out over last few years?

There have been many stand out moments for me over the years. What pops straight into my head is Jamie Lee Major’s shows, the runways are always incredible. I remember one flower filled show where I created four looks around the collection's inspiration. I still get references from these looks today and we had so much fun doing them.

At last year’s International Runway show I loved seeing the occasional red pigmented, powdered eye, and then the sequinned first model out stole the show! However there is nothing more beautiful than polished perfection where the models just look like the best radiant version of themselves which allows the collection to shine which, believe it or not, is the hardest make up to get right and last year’s Opening Night runway styled by Mark Vassallo was just that!

I appreciate great Stylists who understand it's a collaborative effort. Mark, Caterina Scardino, Teagan Phillips are just a few of the many I love working with.

What are some of the key inspirations for team at Artists At Play for this upcoming Perth Fashion Festival?

Once I receive the inspiration behind the collections, colours, and textures, I then go on to design the makeup look for the show.

I've always liked to bring a little feeling back from where I’ve worked in New York, London, Milan and Paris Fashion Weeks to Telstra Perth Fashion Festival.

Artists At Play have an important role within the industry in fostering Western Australian talent, who are the up and coming young talents to keep an eye on?

The great thing about makeup is you can start at any age and go on to have a successful career.

I'm based in Sydney now and I work with some amazing people, however I've always been surrounded by talented creatives in Perth. Managing MAC cosmetics in Perth many years ago, we were inspired by each other’s creativity and bounced back and forth all the time.

My super talented close Perth friends Hendra, Ash Brockman, Thomas Dekluyver are already artists to watch and follow. Thomas is keying massive shows globally such as Kenzo, Ferragamo, painting the faces on supermodels such as Gigi and Kendal.

Our lecturers at Artists At Play are definitely some of the young ones to watch for up and coming artists. Bruce Lim who did the beautiful Telstra Perth Fashion Festival Campaign is amazing and such a humble artist who loves to share his knowledge with our students.

What key hair and makeup trends do you think we will see on the runway in the future?

I'm not the person to predict hair, although I am excited to see the hair brief as it influences the makeup just as everything in the story. I'm loving where makeup is at currently on the runway, it's staying true to itself and it has a point of view.

It's less about perfection and more about personality. There's a playful twist, exploring self-expression and I think you will be seeing more of that this year at the festival.
